Tate & Lyle [Competition]

in Giveaways

It’s competition time again folks. This time it’s courtesy of Tate & Lyle, probably the UK’s most famous sugar company.

sugar
Tate  & Lyle has committed to making its entire retail range 100% Fairtrade and  you can get most of their sugars in Waitrose and The Co-op and they are just  starting to sell their Fairtrade granulated sugar in Tesco.

To celebrate the launch of their new Facebook Page We Love Baking, they are offering one lucky reader a selection of their sugars.

All you need to do is leave a comment here telling me your fondest baking memory. The competition will close Wednesday 25th August at midnight (GMT). I will announce the winner the following day.

Please note the competition is open to UK residents only.

Baking with my nice Gran.
We always went to see Gran and Grandad on a Sunday, about once every 6-8 weeks probably. We arrived in time for proper Sunday Lunch, then she and I would bake one of cakes/scones/biscuits/flapjacks/etc in the kitchen while everyone else slept and chatted in the sitting room. Then off to church at 3pm and back for afternoon tea with our creations.
I didn’t know anyone else who could bake well and without this time with her I would never have got into cooking in any way. My mother did bake, but was hopeless and so not inspiring. Special times in a not so special childhood.

My fondest memory is baking my little girls 1st birthday cake it was just the two of us and i’d been suffering with sever PND. I dragged her highchair into the kitchen and she “helped” me mix and spoon the mixture into the pan, ate loads of icing and destroyed the kitchen!

Was so soo much fun!

Sounds blissful, sorry about the PND though,

I love baking although have been very lax recently with a wedding to organise for my youngest born daughter. My fondest memory is struggling to finish the “Postman Pat” letter-box cake for my older sons third birthday whilst in labour for the bith of my daughter. It’s difficult applying the bright red icing to the basic shape when you have to stop every 5 minutes for a contraction!

I managed to finish the cake and get to hospital but missed his birthday party. (Oops, naughty Mummy!)

That’ll be me you were having then… hihii

Interestingly, my fondest memories of baking always include my Mum. I remember coming in from school (probably pushing my dollies in their double buggy) and getting to help Mum make some cake for the week. It was always great fun. We had high chairs so we could reach the side and would help stir and measure. Breaking eggs was always fun, although fishing the shells back out again took a long time.
I remember passing someone the milk, and deciding it would be a good idea to pass it over my head. Top down. Yup, the lid wasn’t on. And my sister’s comment when I burst into tears? Don’t cry over spilt milk….

BUT the best bit about baking had to be licking the spoon and the bowl. I would help Mum to put the cake mix in the tin, scraping it really badly. That way I got more mix to eat raw… the best!

My favourite baking memory is the first time I baked Christmas cookies on my own in my own kitchen. I had a tiny kitchen with literally 12 square inches of counter space, and that counter was underneath a staircase so there was no head room. It was such a palaver, but I was determined. I made 6 dozen Christmas cutouts, iced and decorated in that tiny space all on my own. Only 6 cookies would fit in the non-standard oven at a time. I was so proud to take those in and share with my coworkers, after all that hard work.

Baking nowadays sometimes seems like a chore, or a mindless activity. But that time, so much time spent, back aching… was just fun.

I have so many fond memories of baking I find it so soothing and rewarding when my accomplishments are enjoyed by those I love. My strongest memory is quite a recent memory between my Dad and I. He died of melanoma late last year and was on lots of steroids to help ease his cancer. Consequently he developed type-2 diabetes and had to regulate his sugar intake and take tablets. He adored my banana loaf and used to look forward to the weekends when I would bring a loaf down for him to enjoy. I think you really have to enjoy the little pleasures in life, particularly when your life is coming to an end. I was unsure how I would carry on this tradition of bringing him baked cakes once he was diagnosed with diabetes but managed to find a diabetic recipe to use. It was very tasty and the three or four helpings he had showed how much he enjoyed it. I was so glad I was able to give him a treat he could enjoy worry free and every time I bake my banana loaf now I think of him!

My favourite baking memory is when I told my two daughters we’d make a special birthday cake for daddy and that they could add whatever they liked from my baking cupboard to make it pretty. I wasn’t counting on a child’s imagination !! It had two halves, one red and one blue, from mixing food colouring into the cake mixture. And I’ve never seen so many silver balls, jelly diamonds and hundreds and thousands on the top of one cake !!

Aww, very sweet but yes OTT doesn’t come into play with children decorating cakes does it?

My favourite memories of baking are from when I was a little girl – stood up on chairs at the kitchen table in my grandmas kitchen… baking scones, never ever cut with cutters but always patted into shape with a butter knife and a floured hand. The kitchen always warm, and always smelling of cake or sage drying in the oven :)

One of my earliest childhood memories is a cake my mum made me for my birthday, it was in the shape of a house and had a pink icing roof. The icing was so thick and sickly the cake was inedible, but I’ve always remembered it!

That’s the trouble with some decorated cakes isn’t it … but they’re still worth it.

Baking fairy cakes with my son and letting him decorate them as he likes. I remember when he was about 3 years old, he decided that his little plastic toys would be the “perfect touch”, and he was quite disappointed with his Mummy who removed all the sticky elephants from the fairy cakes before the cakes went into the oven.
My baby son Eddie is one month old today, and I am looking forward to baking cakes with him in the future.

My fondest baking memories are those of me, my Mum and my Nan baking with my oldest daughter. Sadly my youngest 2 daughters were born after my Nan passed away. All four generations in the same kitchen having fun and learning together. Nan teaching us her favourite old recipes and Mum and I sharing some of our modern favourites with my eldest daughter ‘helping’ and learning too. All of my 3 daughters love to bake and it reminds us of fun times past as my Mum is living back in NZ. When she came to visit for a month last Christmas we baked mince pies and made chocolate truffles, peppermint cremes and gingerbread loaf – with all three generations in the same kitchen. We only have a really small kitchen too so ended up having to do most of the mixing and rolling on the kitchen table LOL!

My fondest baking memory was during the last big recession. My then boyfriend had been made redundant from his job some months earlier and work was hard to find. But on my birthday he cooked me a meal, made me a card and produced a cake he had baked especially for me. It was a lovely jammy Victoria sponge and was the first cake anyone ever baked for me! I think it has been the best present I’ve ever received. Needless to say I married him, I know a good thing when I find it!!
