A Taste Of The Dentist

in Meat

I can think of no other way to describe last nights evening meal that a true taste of the dentist, needless to say it wasn’t a great success of a meal despite its good looks and great smell, oh if only I could convey the smell to you.

The dish: Bouef Gardian from Flavours of Provence: Recipes from the South of France (Clare Ferguson), a book jam packed with gorgeous sounding recipes and French food history/useful hints & tips to get authentic food, but oh what a disappointment. The flavour of the cloves (which I’d reduced in number) overpowered every other taste in the dish and left that dreadful dental aftertaste too :( Not exactly the warming, comforting dish I was hoping for after a long walk in the cold, frosty countryside with wee Murph. Oh well one to leave well alone in future; I won’t be typing up the recipe, trust me you don’t need it.

At least the vegetable accompaniment of mashed swede and potatoes which I crisped in the oven, and wine were good :)

I’m sorry the recipe didn’t work out. It does look lovely and I can imagine the smell with all the cloves would be gorgeous. Shame it didn’t live up to expectation. Vicky xxx

I’m sorry to hear that… I wonder what gave it taste like this… there is herb, you can read about it on my site, that actually smells like dentist, the name is Tabac Zombie (Ghost Tobacco) and have antiseptic properties.

i can’t believe they asked you to put whole cloves in? next time, try wrapping them in some cheesecloth secured with some kitchen string… you can fish it out before you serve.

next time, don’t do cloves and maybe try making it in a pressure cooker. the beef will be falling apart! i hate crappy cook books!

I’m so sorry. It is so disappointing after the time and effort you put into a meal and it ends up tasting awful.

Margot it’s the cloves that gave the ‘dental’ taste.

Jonathan I bet the stew would have been fabulous except for the cloves, I might try it again without them but I’m in no great hurry.
